Tutorial - How to make Distressed Jeans

So my 10 year old, Leah, has 6 pairs of jeans, all boot cut, that she won't wear. They have been sitting around forever. So I decided to distress them and make some into shorts.
Others I will make into Skinny Jeans.

Here is the super easy Tutorial......

Supplies
any kind of jeans, old, new, boot cut etc.
Scissors
Lemon Zester (worked the best for me) or cheese grater
Tape Measure (If you will be turning them into shorts)
X-Acto knife
Bleach
With the Zester/Grater start on a section of the jean you want distressed and rub that area over and over. It works good to have a piece of wood or hard surface behind it. Lint will start flying everywhere, including your nose, so beware :-).

It will start looking like this:

The holes will happen fast, so work slowly. I found with the first pair I made, I made the holes too big by rubbing too much...therefore, not good for a 10 year old to wear to school, but OK for play.
If you lay the jeans over the edge of a table, and rub the grater across the edge, it makes these cool lines

Repeat with the other leg.

Remember whatever distressing you make, will intensify after going in the washer and dryer.

Get your X-Acto knife and carefully cut through the top layer of threads in the opposite direction of the grain only until the white threads show.

Do not cut through the white threads...results in holes that will only get bigger with washing.

Distress around the pockets

and the back pockets

I took some bleach and sprayed droplets around the whole front with my finger. Or you can use a bleach pen and bleach around the distress marks you already made.

If you are going to make shorts, now is when you measure and cut them, to the shortness of your liking.

Then throw 'em in the wash.

Here are the after pictures of the first couple I had did:

Lastly, I will turn up the cuffs on the shorts and sew them, or you can just leave them frayed.

Next....we will turn some of our jeans into Skinny Jeans!

So Many Changes, So Little Time!

Well where did August go? I mean really, where has it gone? I cannot believe it is over. Oh wait, there was one dreadful day in August I won't forget, I turned 30 on the 29th!! Ahh, I do feel my age now, but I am spending my time with my most loved people in the world!

August was so busy with soccer starting for the girls, back to school, hubby lost his job, and all that jazz.

I am doing contracting work with home inspections and love it. I asked for more work and I was given a boat load!

Ryan lifted himself up in the crib yesterday to stand for the first time, he giggled and giggled each time until his wobbly little legs gave out. He will be 8 months on Tuesday !

And here is some new Monkey Tots treats to hold you for a while, they are in my shop too :-)
